Lectures for the Friends of Stanford Mathematics
Brian Conrad, David Hoffman, and I have helped organize public
lectures at Stanford over the last couple of years. They have
provided an opportunity to gather together friends of mathematics.
"Friends of Stanford Mathematics" is a name we have used to describe
an unofficial group of people supportive of mathematics at Stanford and more broadly in the San
Francisco Bay Area, including educators, innovators,
students, alumni, and more.
We have invited a sampling of them to
receptions before each of the lectures.
Our speakers so far have been:
Wednesday, October 6, 2010: Terry Tao, The Cosmic Distance Ladder.
Wednesday, February 9, 2011: Shing-Tung Yau: The Shape of Inner Space: String Theory and the Geometry of the Universe's Hidden Dimensions
Wednesday, April 20, 2011: Manjul Bhargava: Linguistics, Poetry, and Mathematics
Forthcoming in the 2011-2012 academic year: Benedict Gross from Harvard University will give a public lecture in winter quarter. Our own Persi Diaconis will give a public lecture in fall quarter.
We hope to make these lectures a regular occurrence.
