Introduction to algebraic groups (Daniel Allcock, Texas) We will develop the basic structure of algebraic groups over an algebraically closed field of any characteristic. Emphasis will be on explicit constructions and descriptions of objects rather than abstract theory. Depending on time and interest, we may also look at what happens over a field which is not algebraically closed. Students should be comfortable with varieties and their basic properties (e.g., what's good about proper maps, how dimensions of fibers of maps behave) but need no previous background in algebraic groups. Lie group background would be useful (for motivating various constructions) but is not required.
