Upcoming and recently past conferences I am organizing or participating in.
Co-organizer (with Lek-Heng Lim) of Applied Multilinear Algebra minisymposium, SIAM Conference on Applied Linear Algebra, 10/26-29/2009, Monterey Bay-Seaside, CA.
Co-organizer (with Risi Kondor and Guy Lebanon) of Algebraic methods in machine learning (December 11-12, 2008), a symposium and workshop at NIPS 2008, in Vancouver and Whistler. Here are the Minisymposium and Workshop schedules.
There has recently been a surge of interest in algebraic methods in machine learning. In no particular order, this includes: new approaches to ranking problems; the budding field of algebraic statistics; and various applications of non-commutative Fourier transforms. The aim of the workshop is to bring together these distinct communities, explore connections, and showcase algebraic methods to the machine learning community at large. AML'08 is intended to be accessible to researchers with no prior exposure to abstract algebra.
Co-organizer (with J.M. Landsberg and Lek-Heng Lim) of an MSRI Graduate Workshop (July 7-19, 2008): Geometry and Representation Theory of Tensors for Computer Science, Statistics, and other areas.
The workshop will be based around The Geometry of Tensors, with applications to complexity, statistics, and engineering, a draft book by J.M. Landsberg and myself. This was in part a lead up to the following AIM conference. Videos of many of the lectures are available on the MSRI page.
Co-organizer (with J.M. Landsberg, Lek-Heng Lim, and Jerzy Weyman) of an AIM Conference (July 21-26, 2008): Geometry and representation theory of tensors for computer science, statistics and other areas.
The goal of this workshop is to implement advanced techniques from geometry and representation theory to problems in several areas of research. Each of the problems relates to varieties in spaces of tensors. The areas include: computational complexity, statistical learning theory, signal processing, and scientific data analysis. The main goal of the workshop is getting researchers in very different areas, working on problems with similar underlying mathematics, to share knowledge and work together to advance projects.
