Math 52: Integral Calculus of Several Variables

Spring 2024

Course Description: This is the second quarter in a yearly sequence on calculus of several variables. We discuss several generalizations of the one-variable integration to a multivariable setting. The material covered includes iterated integrals and Fubini Theorems; line and surface integrals (both scalar and vector integrals); vector analysis with applications to potentials and conservative vector fields, physical interpretations; divergence theorem and the theorems of Green, Gauss, and Stokes.

Textbook: Calculus: Volume 3 by Edwin Herman and Gilbert Strang, available for free online. We will cover material from chapters 5 and 6.

Prerequisites: Math 21 and Math 51 or equivalents. Students are expected to be familiar with single variable integration techniques (Math 21 material), and the Math 51 material such as partial derivatives and multivariable differentiation, vector operations and basic linear algebra, linear maps and matrices (§ 13-14 of Math 51 text), computing area of parallelograms via determinants (§ E.3 and bottom of p. 668 of Math 51 text).

Grading Policy: The course grade is based on the following components:
- participation polls: 5% (graded out of 80% of total points, with a maximum of 100%)
- homework 20% (two lowest scores dropped)
- midterm exams 20% each
- final exam 35%
Exam information: There will be two evening midterm exams, and one final exam. The exam dates are given below; it is your responsibility to verify right now that you can attend these exams. If you have an academic conflict with the scheduled exam time, please contact us as soon as possible, but no later than two weeks before the exam. If an emergency occurs and you need to miss an exam, contact us as soon as possible.

Each student is allowed to bring one 8.5 × 11-inch piece of paper (regular printer paper) to each exam on which they can put on both sides whatever material they wish from the course coverage as an Exam Reference Sheet to be used by the student during the exam. Both the front and back can be used, but it must be handwritten!

With the exception of the Exam Reference Sheet, all exams for Math 53 are closed-book with no calculators or other electronic aids permitted. (We keep the numbers reasonably simple on exams, so there is no need for a calculator.)

You will have assigned seating for exams. The seating chart will be posted in the exam classroom on the day of the exam; you are responsible for arriving a few minutes early to find your seat before the exam starts. Failure to sit in your assigned seat will be considered a breach of the Stanford Honor Code and be handled accordingly.

Homework Policy: Weekly assignments are posted every Wednesday and due on Gradescope the following Wednesday before 10 a.m. PDT; no late homework will be accepted under any circumstances. However, the two lowest homework scores will be dropped from the computation of your final grade.
You are encouraged to work together on the problem sets, and you may discuss the problem sets with instructional staff, SUMO tutors, etc. But you must write your own solutions individually and in your own words (copying from a classmate, internet or other sources and then submitting it for credit is a violation of the Stanford Honor Code).
Gradescope only accepts electronic submissions, so you must scan your solutions (see here and here for Gradescope uploading instructions). Please allow sufficient time for uploading the solutions before the deadline.
For full credit show all work, using words and pictures for justification. The ideal homework is neatly and carefully written, well scanned, with each problem clearly marked by starting a new page. If your solution is multiple pages, you must separately assign pages to each problem in Gradescope.
Usually only a portion of each week's assigned problems are graded (and the selection of problems chosen to be graded will not be announced in advance).
Regrade policy: Any regrade requests must be submitted through Gradescope within 72h from the release of that graded work, and must include sufficient justification for regrading. The requested solutions will be re-evaluated and their scores may be adjusted up, down, or remain unchanged (in case of an exam, other parts of your work may also be regraded).

Participation polls: There will be a short questionnaire through Canvas due at 11:59 p.m. PDT of each lecture day (so on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). It will involve answering a few questions meant to reinforce and gauge your understanding of the previous lecture.

Worksheets: The TuTh discussion sections focus on small-group collaboration with worksheets consisting of problems designed around the learning goals and themes in the homework and exam questions. The goal is to engage with the new skills and concepts, and to learn from your peers as well as from the guidance of the TA who answers questions. Download each worksheet a day before the corresponding discussion section. These worksheets are not graded, and solutions are provided later in the day for each TuTh worksheet.

Honor Code Policy: By Math Department policy, any student found to be in violation of the Honor Code on any assignment or exam in this course will receive a final course letter grade of NP. Students are fully responsible for adhering to the requirements of the Honor Code document.
