Incompressible Surfaces in Hyperbolic Punctured Torus Bundles are Strongly Detected

My thesis is available here (submitted May 2007). It bears a striking resemblance to the above paper, as it covers essentially the same material but with some better exposition, so look at this instead of the paper until I get around to updating the paper.
