Textbook Linear algebra done right, by Axler.
About the class. The topic of the class is linear algebra, the study of vector spaces and linear maps. The focus of the class will be very theoretical. We will start with the axioms of vector spaces and linear maps, and we the properties and structure that can be deduced from these axioms. We will give rigorous proofs, and will emphasize proper mathematical language and notation. An important goal of the class (besides learning linear algebra, of course) is to learn how to write. Your homework and finals will be judged accordingly. If you are more interested in applications of the theory, you should consider taking math 104 instead.
| Exams | |
|---|---|
| Midterm | open book, 2/7, 7PM - 9PM in 420-041 |
| Final | open book, 3/17, 8:30AM - 11:30AM in 380-380X |
Grades Homework 30%, Midterm 30%, Final exam 40%.
Lecture plan. You can find a schedule of covered material here. It will be updated after each lecture.
Homework is due Wednesday in class. Problems will be posted below, a week before they are due. You may discuss the problems with each other, but you must work on your own when you write them down. Late homework will not be accepted under any circumstances, but your lowest homework score will be thrown away before calculating the average. Homework problems will often consist proofs. Even if the problem doesn't start with "Prove that ...", you are expected to prove that your answer is correct. Make sure you write complete sentences (not just a string of formulas), and emphasize which axioms, propositions, lemmas and theorems you use in your argument.
