Fundamental groups in characteristic p
The fundamental group in algebraic topology is an important object that helps us better understand topological spaces. There is an analogous notion of the fundamental group in algebraic geometry. In characteristic 0, it is a well-behaved object, and much of the theory parallels the theory from topology. However, in characteristic p, its behavior is much stranger and more mysterious. For example, the fundamental group of the projective line minus several points depends on which points were deleted. We will look at some examples and explanations of this strange behavior and survey some of the known results.
