Asynchronous Variational Integrators for Solid Mechanics

Abstract:

Discrete variational mechanics provides a geometric foundation for understanding symplectic-momentum and multisymplectic-momentum integrators for mechanical ODEs and PDEs. In this talk we will discuss the variational multisymplectic formulation of continuum mechanics, focusing on classical solid mechanics, and show how discretizations of this can be used to construct spacetime asynchronous integrators. These methods have a number of appealing theoretical and practical properties, as will be demonstrated on some simple elastodynamics problems.
