Modeling and Simulation for
Epitaxial Growth with Elastic Strain

Abstract:

Epitaxy is the growth of a thin film on a substrate, in which the lattice properties of the film are determined by those of the substrate. A mismatch between the lattice spacing of the substrate and film will introduce a strain into the film, which can significantly influence the material structure and properties. This talk will describe a new multi-scale approach to inclusion of elastic strain in epitaxial growth, using a discrete elastic energy that is consistent with both atomistic interactions and continuum elasticity.
