Electromagnetic scattering and design

We will briefly review the analytic and computational foundations of fast multipole methods (FMMs) for electromagnetics, focusing on their use in solving scattering problems in complex geometry. While FMMs have allowed for the solution of large scale problems with modest computational resources, even faster solution times are required in many design environments. We will describe a recently developed class of fast, direct solvers that is ideally suited for such problems, and will discuss the creation of a new generation of design tools.
