Multiterminal networks: determining the traffic matrix from input-output measurements

Consider a Markov chain with certain boundary states and many internal states. If P denotes the unknown transition probability matrix, the problem is to say something about P from measurements that involve only the boundary states. In certain cases, the use of some extension of classical work of S. Karlin and J. McGregor can be used to give a rather complete analysis of the problem.
