BEvolution of Longevity and Diversity in the Rockfish

Abstract:

The rockfish (Sebastes spp.) are remarkable for their diversity (>70 species along the west coast of North America) and longevity (lifetimes of many species exceed 100 years, when a 20 year old fish is usually considered long-lived). Exactly how this has happened is unknown and begs investigation. I will first review some general principles of demography and then develop a sequence of models of increasing complexity that allow us to understand the great diversity and longevity of the rockfish.
