    Instructor: Anthony Licata
    Office: 380-382 C.
    Contact: amlicata(at)math(dot)stanford(dot)edu

Math 53 is a first course in Ordinary Differential Equations. The main goal of the course is to learn to solve systems of linear ODEs. We will also discuss the Laplace transform, some non-linear ODEs, and applications.

    Lecture sections and office hours

There are two lecture sections for this course:
    Section 01, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00am - 10:50am, in ApPhy200.
    Section 02, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1:15pm - 2:05pm, in 380-380Y.

My office hours will be from 4:00pm-5:30pm on Mondays and Tuesdays in 380-381 U (when it is available) or my office, 380-382C. Course Materials

The text for the course is "Differential Equations: An Introduction to Modern Methods and Applications", by Brannan and Boyce.
Here is the syllabus for the course.

    Grading

    Homework: 10%
Homework will be due each week on Thursday at 5:00pm to your TA. The lowest homework score will be dropped.

    Quizzes : 10%
Most Fridays the first 10 minutes of class will be devoted to taking a very short one problem quiz. Quizzes will be collected exactly 10 minutes into the start of class, and cannot be made up. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped.

    First Midterm : 20%

    Second Midterm : 20%

    Final Exam : 40%

The Brannan and Boyce text has a number of sugggested projects at the end of each chapter. If you wish to do one for extra credit, please see me and we can discuss a time for you to do a project presentation.
