Declaring a Math major

Students declaring a Math major require approval from the Mathematics Department. The approval is routine, consisting simply of a check that a reasonable number of Math courses have been successfully completed, based on the number of quarters of registration.

Declare Math as a major on Axess. This will put your name on a ‘pending’ list. Major declarations are reviewed every few weeks. Shortly after our review, you will receive an e-mail message from the department. You will be asked if you want to choose a faculty adviser or have one appointed. Your adviser can be any member of the Mathematics Department faculty.

The Department expects students to be familiar with all Math degree requirements described in the current Stanford Bulletin. Other information may be found on the Department web site.

Students with a double major or a minor should be aware that the only courses that the Math Department allows to be double counted are the Math 50 or 50H series and first year calculus. If the constraints on double counting become a problem, a student has the option of declaring Math as a secondary major which allows unlimited double counting.
