Program, Admission and Applicant Information

Please read the following information before contacting the Mathematics Department:

IMPORTANT MESSAGE:

The Mathematics Department does not offer a Master’s of Science (MS) Degree to non-matriculated students. For outside (non-Stanford) applicants, the Mathematics Department offers admission to the PhD program only. The Financial Mathematics and Scientific Computing and Computational Mathematics (SCCM) programs offer MS Degrees. Contact the respective departments for program and admission information:

What fields of mathematics can students study in the PhD program?
Both pure and applied mathematics can be studied; there is no separate Applied Mathematics program. To see faculty specializations go to: http://math.stanford.edu/faculty.html

Is the Financial Math program part of the Mathematics Department?
The Financial Mathematics program is an interdisciplinary program administered jointly by the Statistics and Mathematics Departments. However, admission matters for this program are handled exclusively by the Statistics Department which is also the home of all of its incoming graduate students. How many years of study is the PhD program?
Five years is the typical amount of time it takes to complete the program.

If admitted to the PhD program, will I receive financial aid?
All admitted PhD students who make satisfactory progress are fully funded for five years. Funding sources include: department fellowships, teaching assistantships and research assistantships.

How do I apply?
You may apply online. All applicants should carefully read the Guide to Graduate Admissions on the Graduate Admissions website: http://gradadmissions.stanford.edu

What is the application deadline?
The application deadline is January 8, 2008.
Please note:
The Mathematics Department holiday closure begins at 5:00pm December 21, 2007 and reopens January 3, 2008.

Do I need to take the GRE Math Subject Test as well as the General GRE?
Yes, both the General and Subject GRE are required for all applicants.

I missed the GRE test date. Can I still apply?
No.
The GRE (general and subject) is required of all applicants. There are no exceptions.

What if my GRE scores do not arrive on time?
Applicants whose GRE scores arrive shortly after (14 days maximum) the January 8, 2007 deadline will still be considered. However, admission will not be offered without receipt of GRE scores.
Please note: If you take the GRE later than the November 2007 test date, you will not be eligible to apply for 2008 admission.

How do I know when my GRE scores will arrive at Stanford?
Please contact ETS (Educational Testing Service) at http://www.ets.org for scoring information.

What GRE scores and GPA range are required for admission?
The Mathematics Department does not have minimum GRE or GPA requirements, however admission is extremely competitive. Admission is based on letters of recommendation, depth of undergraduate program, GRE scores, course grades, statement of purpose, and for non-native English speakers, TOEFL scores.

Do I need to have a Master’s Degree to apply for the PhD program?
No, a master’s degree is not required.

Is the TOEFL required of all international applicants?
The TOEFL is required of all applicants whose first language is not English. However, if you have completed a bachelor’s degree or a two-year master’s program from a university in an English speaking country, you do not have to submit TOEFL scores. Please read the information for international applicants on the Graduate Admissions website for complete TOEFL information and scoring.

If I applied to the PhD program last year do I still need to send letters of recommendation and GRE scores?
Yes. You must submit a completed application and application materials each time you apply to the PhD program. This includes letters of recommendation, test scores and application fee.

What documents are needed in order for my application to be considered complete?
A completed application must have the following items:
- Complete and Signed Application
- Application Fee of $105.00 (USD)
- Statement of Purpose
- Official GRE Scores
- Official TOEFL Scores (International Applicants Only)
- Official Transcripts
- Letters of Recommendation

Are students admitted in Winter and Spring terms?
No. The Math Department does not offer rolling admissions. Students are admitted into the PhD program for Autumn Quarter only.

How can I request a paper application?
Applicants are highly encouraged to apply online. For an addtional fee, it is possible to request a paper application through Graduate Admissions: http://gradadmissions.stanford.edu The Mathematics Department does not mail out paper applications.

When are admission decisions made?
Admission decisions are made between late February and mid March. The Mathematics Department will notify all applicants via email as soon as decisions have been made.
