Transportation to/from and around Stanford

This page contains directions to the Stanford area from the two closest airports,
the San Jose, CA, International Airport (SJC) and the San Francisco International Airport (SFO),
as well as information about transportation in Palo Alto and parking at Stanford.
Stanford University maintains a list of local hotels and a collection of maps.
 

From SJC to the Stanford Area

By Bus             Take the VTA Bus #10 (Free,~15min) to the Santa Clara CalTrain Station (last stop).
Cross the parking lot, walking away from the railroad tracks.
Take the VTA Bus #22 ($1.40,~70min) to Palo Alto/Menlo Park.
   For Stanford   Get off at the Palo Alto CalTrain Station and walk to Stanford.
   For Sheraton   Get off at the Palo Alto CalTrain Station and cross University Avenue,
the road that runs under the tracks. The main entrance is on El Camino Real.
 
By Train
(weekdays only)		             Take the VTA Bus #10 (Free,~15min) to the Santa Clara CalTrain Station (last stop).
Take a northbound CalTrain ($2.25,~25min.) towards San Francisco, on the farther tracks.
   For Stanford   Get off at the Palo Alto Station, cross under the tracks, and walk to Stanford.
   For Sheraton   Get off at the Palo Alto Station and cross University Avenue, the road
that runs under the tracks. The main entrance is on El Camino Real.

   For Stanford   Ask to be dropped off at the Stanford Oval, at the end of Palm Drive.
 
By Car
            Take US101 North, towards San Francisco, for about 20mi.
   For Stanford   Take the University Avenue, Palo Alto, exit.
Proceed straight on University Avenue and Palm Drive to the Stanford Oval (~4mi).
   For Sheraton   Take the Embarcadero Road, Palo Alto, exit. After passing under the CalTrain tracks,
take right on El Camino Real, a six-lane road. The Sheraton will soon be on your right.
 

From SFO to the Stanford Area

By Bus             Take the SamsTransit Bus KX ($1.25,~55min) to Stanford/Palo Alto.
   For Stanford   Get off at the Stanford Shopping Center (usually the last stop).
Walk up to the bridge and turn right on Palm Dr.
Follow the walking directions from the Palo Alto CalTrain Station.
   For Sheraton   Get off at the Stanford Shopping Center (usually the last stop).
Walk up to the bridge, turn left, and cross the bridge.
Turn right and continue along El Camino Real to the main entrance.
 
By Train
(weekdays only)		             Take the SFO CalTrain Shuttle (Free,~5min) to the Millbrae CalTrain Station.
Take a southbound CalTrain ($3.75,~35min.) towards San Jose/Gilroy, on the closer tracks.
   For Stanford   Get off at the Palo Alto Station and walk to Stanford.
   For Sheraton   Get off at the Palo Alto Station and cross University Avenue, the road
that runs under the tracks. The main entrance is on El Camino Real.

By Car
            Take US101 South, towards San Jose, for about 25mi.
   For Stanford   Take the University Avenue/Palo Alto exit.
Proceed straight on University Avenue and Palm Drive to the Stanford Oval (~4mi).
   For Sheraton   Take the Embarcadero Road, Palo Alto, exit. After passing under the CalTrain tracks,
take right on El Camino Real, a six-lane road. The Sheraton will soon be on your right.
 

Local Transportation

The VTA Bus #22 ($1.40) runs along El Camino Real. The closest bus stop served by public transportation on weekends is the Palo Alto CalTrain Station, about a mile away. From the bus isle at the station, walk away from the railroad tracks, cross on the University Avenue-Palm Drive bridge over El Camino Real, and continue on Palm Drive to its end at the Stanford Oval. The Mathematics Building, also known as the Sloan Building and Building 380, is accessible through the right-most door of the huge structure in front of you, also known as the Quad. However, depending on the location of your hotel, you may be best off walking directly to Stanford.
 

Parking at Stanford

Parking is generally free and existent at Stanford on weekends and after 4p.m. on weekdays. The closest parking spots are around the Stanford Oval, at the end of Palm Drive. Other parking can be found around the end of Embarcadero Road.
